| Item Description: | Imperial coat of arms at head of title. Volume of photographs includes contents page and 85 albumen prints on pages numbered 1-43. Images measure 22 x 27 cm or smaller, most mounted on sheets 54 x 37 cm, with captions. Five and three prints form two panoramic photographs mounted on sheets 35 x 136 cm (folded to 35 x 60 cm) and 36 x 77 cm (folded to 36 x 49 cm). Most photographs were taken in 1864 by Sergeant James McDonald of the British Royal Engineers, with three taken by Peter Bergheim who operated a commercial studio in Jerusalem. Images show exterior and interior views of the Temple Mount, the Citadel, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, city walls and gates, tombs, street scenes, and general views of the city. |
