Description
Item Description:Caption title, p. [17]. Signed and dated on p. 5: "D. Humphreys. Humphreysville, Sept. 1, 1815." F. L. Humphreys, Life and Times of David Humphreys (New York, 1917) v.2, p. 467-468, states that the work was issued in Boston.
Sabin, who examined the present copy, points out that although pages [l-2] are absent, the original stitching and wrappers indicate that the pamphlet was issued without a title page. He is incorrect in stating that the signature is complete without it, as the first leaf actually has been cancelled, leaving five.
The copies listed by F. L. Humphreys and by Wegelin, and one of those described in the National Union Catalog, also appear to lack the title leaf; but a copy in Yale University Library includes it. The recto is a half-title reading: "The Yankey in England, a drama, in five acts. By General Humphreys." The verso reads: "Copy right secured, according to act."
Pages [3]-16 contain preliminary matter.
Pages [103]-110 contain: "Glossary of words used in a peculiar sense ... or pronounced with an accent or emphasis in certain districts, different from the modes generally followed by the inhabitants of the United States."
Errata: p. 110.
