Hill, who is currently the curator of Canadian art for the National Gallery of Canada, lends his expertise to this study of the small group of artists who found abundant material in Canada's rich landscapes to promote a truly national art during the 1920s. The book complements a new touring exhibition of the Group of Seven's work that has been mounted by the National Gallery. It is a richly illustrated and beautifully written document, complete with scholarly apparatus. One minor complaint is the difficulty one encounters searching for illustrations of specific art works; italicized figure references in the index would have been helpful.
