These were debates in which President John F. Kennedy and Prime Minister Harold Macmillan were constant and influential, though not always harmonious, participants. Contrasting domestic political imperatives and conceptions of how the Cold War could best be won created profound tensions between the two allies. Dr Oliver argues, however, that the British and American governments retained a broad unity of perspective and purpose, eventually producing the imaginative diplomacy that resulted in the signing of the Limited Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty in August 1963. He also reaches fresh conclusions about the impact of neutral nations, the threat of nuclear proliferation, the Cuban missile crisis and Kennedy's American University address on the international test-ban debate."--BOOK JACKET.
