520 |a This recreation of the battle for Algiers, part of the 1957 war for independence that was fought at tremendous cost throughout Algeria, has an authenticity that has rarely been seen in the history of cinema. Whether due to the newsreel style cinematography created by Marcello Gatti, or the use of non actors in many of the major scenes, The Battle of Algiers achieves a believability that is still stirring in its impact four decades after the film was made. The documentary style of the film was so convincing that the American distributor added a disclaimer to the film stating that "not one foot" of actual newsreel was included in the film. The Battle of Algiers has been used by such diverse groups as the Black Panthers and members of the Pentagon as a case study of insurgency and counter-insurgency. The Pentagon studied the flm in preparation for its counter-insurgency campaign following the invasion of Iraq in 2003. The Battle of Algiers dramatizes the violence that took place in Algiers in 1957, a key year in Algeria's struggle for independence from France. As violence escalates on both sides, the French resort to torture in their quest to infiltrate the Algerian resistance. The FLN responds with a bombing campaign, planting bombs in cafés and assassinating French policemen. The Algerian struggle for independence ended in 1962, when Algeria became a separate state. Algeria had been a department of the French Republic since 1830. "Because of its perfect fusion of form and content, this is one of the most strikingly successful subversive films ever made. Its revolutionary fervor, though subtly muted by a compassionate humanism that embraces both camps, is pure and passionate." Amos Vogel
