This documentary by Ọla Balogun provides an overview of Nigerian culture's deep connections to the afterlife, a realm in which many Nigerians believe their ancestral spirits continue to exist. Nigeria's many and varied celebrations of the dead, take place throughout the year and provide multiple opportunities to celebrate and honor family ancestors. In Lagos, death is celebrated with a brass band and a procession of dancers moving through the streets. In more rural areas, the bereaved family may visit a Yoruba Ogun shrine where they make an offering to the deceased. In the kingdom of Igala on the river Niger, dancers representing the spirits of the Igala's ancestors perform in front of their chief. In addition to long held traditions, contemporary Nigerian artists turn to the parrallel spirit world for inspiration as well. The filmmakers visit the printmaker Bruce Anapaya in his studio where he creates his collagraphs, as well as Lagos sculptors producing bronze ancestral sculptures using the technique of lost wax casting.
