| Summary: | Previously, much of the researches on commitment were focused on organizational commitment among workers. Nevertheless this project endeavored to explore the relationship between the degree of parent commitment, and some parent personal factors and school environment factors. The measures of personal factors consisted of seven elements i.e. age, sex, ethnic group, religion,
education level, category of employment, and level of income. The measures of school environment consisted of school climate, empowerment, school-parent
communication, parent involvement and satisfaction.
This project was conducted on 435 respondents, parents of form three, four, and five students, randomly selected from 12 day secondary schools in Perlis. The influence of those factors on commitment was measured by using t-Test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Analysis, Multiple Regression Analysis, and Stepwise Regression Test. The findings concluded that majority of parents were committed to their children’s school. The result of this study indicated that the scores for all independent and dependent variables as well were relatively moderate. However the correlation between commitment and all the independent variables were positively significant. It implied that by increasing the level of independent variables the degree of parent commitment could be improved. Only three elements of parent personal factors i.e. age, ethnic, and religion have
contributed significant difference on the level of commitment.
The most influential factor was parent’s satisfaction (B-0.36), followed by school climate (B=O. 15): then, communication (B=O. 14) and the least influence traced was from empowerment (B=O. 11) whereas involvement
indicated no contribution to the commitment. Stepwise regression test has shown the evident that all the factors together except involvement contributed 32% to the change in level of commitment. It meant that another 68% was not covered by this research. It might be due to the ‘school morale and effectiveness’ were not included in the study. These two elements were not considered in this
research. |
