| Ringkasan: | The study is an exploration of comparison on the use of education as a tool towards
nation building between Malaysia and Indonesia. The basic issue is globalisation in
Malaysia and Indonesia. No doubt that globalisation have it roles in both countries but
in some aspect it's challenged their national identities. The responsibility towards the
needs of education to contribute in nation building made Malaysia put Nation State
Building as a main in Master Education Developmnent Plan. The study looks into
similarities and differences of the education roles for nation building in Malaysia and
Indonesia. In-depth interviews were carried out with policy makers, school
administrators, teachers and students in Malaysia. Questionnaire items designed from
the interviews. It was followed by interviews and questionaire in Indonesia. Interviews
analysed in verbatim. Questionaire analysed in percentile as confirmation and
elaboration of the interview's data. Result shows that Indonesia used education in a
formal way as tool for indoctrination of nation building since early independent. This
was proof by their Pendidikan Pancasila. In Malaysia, the used of education as
indoctrination tool occured too but not so intensive as Indonesia did. This brought to
conclusion that there is positive effect of education policy towards nation building.
However certain issues could be threaten the implementation. Among them are the
failure of the implementors themself to understand nation building and not all teachers
is ready to inculculate nationhood elements. There is insufficient of methods and
shortage of teachers. Exam orientation could also be a barrier to the effort. For some
students, popular culture outside school is more attractives rather than culture enforce
by the school. The globalisation phenomena has used mass media in elaborating new
culture and challenge the school authority. Hence, very crucial for-the policy maker as
well as the implementor to use relevant methods and strategies in order to make sure
the success of education role in nation building. |
